W4: "My Hero Fights Hunger"

 My Hero Fights Hunger

Figure 1: AI-generated image of the Sky Tower and the Ground Zones

In the year 2222, the world had changed. The rich lived high up in the Sky Towers, where they eat real fruits, vegetables and fresh meat. However, the poor lived below in the dark and polluted Ground Zones. They were forced to buy synthetic food produced by the Towers. It was expensive, tasteless and had no nutrition. Many people could not even afford to eat. Their bodies grew weaker day by day. Farming is illegal. Drones scan the Ground Zones daily to destroy illegal crops and capture protestors.

Keira is 20 years old. She lives in Zone 9, a forgotten place full of broken buildings. Her parents died when she was 14, weak and starving. Since then, she survived on her own. One day, while exploring a broken building, Keira finds an old metal box hidden under broken bricks. On the box was a name Dr. Edward Cullen, a scientist from the past. She opened it and inside was a small and dry seed. Keira felt excited and scared. What if someone saw her?

Still, she decided to take the seed home and plant it in a hidden corner near her old home’s broken window, where a little sunlight came in. Within just one day, the seed grew into a strong green plant. The next day, a real tomato appeared. Keira was shocked. She picked it, took a bite and tears filled her eyes. It was warm, juicy and sweet. She quickly ran to her best friend, Elena and shared the tomato. Elena was speechless. They had never eaten anything real. Keira had a sudden idea to save the seeds from the tomato and share them with more people. She would fight for a world where no one had to starve again.

But the next morning, just as she prepared to deliver the seeds, a patrol drone flew past and spotted the plant. Guards came quickly. They destroyed the plant and took Keira away. Keira was locked up in a cold room at the base of the Sky Tower. The next day, she was moved to a shared prison cell. There, she met a man. It was Dr. Edward Cullen, the scientist whose name was on the seed box. He was the scientist who created the fast growing seeds to fight hunger, but the Tower leaders saw his work as a threat and imprisoned him to keep control over food.

That night, a guard came to check on the cells, but something felt off. He kept his head down. As he reached Keira’s cell, he quickly unlocked the door. It was Elena! She had stolen a guard’s uniform to sneak in. The three of them escaped through an old tunnel and ran back to Elena’s home.

Back in the Ground Zone, the three of them begin replicating the seeds. After weeks of hiding and preparing, they built a plan. They would secretly send seeds to every zone. They told people to plant the seeds at the same time and day. At first, people were scared, but they were also tired. Tired of fake food, tired of control and tired of being hungry. When the seeds were shared, thousands of people stood up together.

In one night, tomatoes, cabbages and potatoes bloomed in every corner. The Sky Towers sent guards to stop them, but it was too late. There were too many plants and too many people. The system could not hold them down anymore. No one was hungry now. And most importantly, they were free.

After that, people kept planting. Keira, Elena and Dr. Cullen made a simple plan called “The Seed Plan”. They shared different seeds, used empty spaces to grow food and taught others how to take care of crops. The environment began to change. The slums, once full of smoke and broken buildings, were now full of green.

Personal Reflection

Writing this blog made me think about the world today. Even though my story is set in the future, the reality is not so different now. There is still a big gap between the rich and the poor. Some people enjoy luxury meals every day, while others struggle to afford basic food. In 2022, approximately 735 million people in the world lived in hunger and 2.3 billion were in a context of food insecurity (Hunger and Food Insecurity Drive Changes in Global Governance, Specialists Say, 2024). Hunger is not just a problem in the future. It is happening now. We need brave people to stand up and make a change, just like Keira.
